Stop Windows Update from Automatically Restarting Your PC

I sat down to work the other day and realized I'd lost about two hours of work because my computer had been automatically rebooted after a Windows update. Another thing I can't stand is how Windows used to constantly remind me that I needed to reboot my computer as if I needed to be told every five minutes or that there was some chance that I would never reboot my computer and these crucial updates would never be applied.

At least the way XP used to do has changed since Vista and Windows 7 allows you to postpone the reboot for 10 minutes or 4 hours. But what if I don't want it to reboot in 4 hours. What if I want to decide when I'm going ot reboot?

reboot

An easy way to disable the reboot for the current Windows session is to stop the Windows Update service.

To disable the Windows Update Service:

  • Open the Command Prompt as administrator.
    cmdasadmin
  • Type the following at the prompt:

    net stop "windows update".
    cmd_update_stop

The service will start back up again when you reboot.
