In Windows 7 you can hide the icons on the desktop.

  • Right-click the desktop and choose View.
  • Choose Show desktop icons.
    hide_icon
  • Do the opposite to get the icons back.

Stardock also has a pretty cool app called Fences that allows you to organize and hide your icons.
