Turn Off Useless Crap

Yep, it's true, you can turn off Internet Explorer in Windows 7. You can also turn off just about every major Windows feature: Media Player, Media Center, Windows Search—everything but the core OS. How's that?

Below is a loooong screenshot of everything you can turn off in Windows 7.

Keep in mind, if you turn off a feature off, it is not available for use. This means the files (binaries and data) are not loaded by the operating system and therefore not available to anyone else using the computer.

But you can turn features back on without the Window disc you can never find.

You have to wonder if all the anti-trust suits have anything to with the new modular nature of these Windows features.

Anyway, to get to the list:

  • Choose Control Panel\Programs and Features.

  • Click Turn Windows features on or off.
    winfeatures1

  • Choose the features you want to turn off.
    winfeatures
