I'm not a very good typist. Despite having worked as a reporter and technical writer I still have to look at the keys when I type. So, if I accidently hit the Caps Lock key I inevitably look up at what I've been typing and see two or three sentences in all caps as if Im shouting my point. The Caps Lock key has for most purposes becaome useless. It can of course be disabled.
Unfortunately there's no easy, "click this button" solution for this and you'll have to root around with the registry. Fortunately you can use the registry keys in the provided zip file.
Here's how it works and where the key is.
Here's the binary data for the registry key:
What that means:
- The zeros at eh beginning have no particular use.
- The 02 represents how many keys plus 1 are going to be re-mapped.
- 3A00 is the caps lock key.
- and nevermind the last zeros
So, that's what those are for. Rather than trying to figure it out, I've attached a zip file with the registry keys. Download it, un-zip it, pick a reg key, and install it. You can double click to install. It works for me, but I'm not taking any responsibility for what may happen with you so back up your registry before doing anything.
Here's what they do:
ChangeCapsToControl.reg Changes Caps Lock to a Control keyChangeCapsToShift.reg Changes Caps Lock to a Shift key
SwitchCapsToScrollLock.reg Swaps Scroll lock and Caps Lock
KillCapsLock.reg Disables the Caps Lock all together
Here's the zip file. Have fun.
