The Muddy Onion, Vermont, 2026

Back: Richard, Hannah, & Jennifer

Front: Deidra & Wendy

The crew - 5 of us riding and 6 total hangin’ - from Habanero Bikes in Salem, MA took a road trip up to Montpelier, VT to participate in the annual Muddy Onion Gravel Ride. It was pretty fantastic. Good peeps, a fairly low share of douchebags (there are always one or two when it comes to bikes).

The weather was perfect, the roads were great, and considering Vermont probably has about 3 miles of flat road in the entire State, not a bad ride.

Here are a few of the highlights.

The videos are 4k - make sure you’re set to at least 1080 in the settings, or they’re going to look like crap.

That F-ing Hill

You’re going to want sound for this one. This was supposedly the last big hill.

We heard that about 7 times. It’s just as steep on the other side,

That One Good Hill

Most of this ride was up. 2000 feet of up, but there’s always a downside, and this was one of them.

The Girls In Red From Maine

We met a couple of women (Andrea and Rebecca) representing the Fast & Happy Bike Shop in Springvale/Sanford Maine - These are clips of them.

“Ride it like you stole it.”

About 2 Hours Crammed Into 18 Minutes

Here’s the full ride, with some edits and cuts. I don’t think anyone wants to sit through the whole ride, but if we could do over two hours, you can do 18 minutes.

Richard Zombeck

Gravel bike, too much gear, way too many gadgets.
